Next steps
You have done the hard part. This is about not leaving anything on the table.
Speak to them if you can
Phone, live chat or in person. A conversation often turns up a better deal than joining online, and the best offers are not always advertised.
Ask for a joining deal
Every insurer offers one to new members, and they compete hard for them. Twelve per cent is the most they can give you in your first year, and six weeks free is what that looks like. Make that the bar.
If they offer four weeks:
“I understand six weeks free is going in the market. Can you match it?”
Usually they can.
Check the price before you sign
They will ask you about Lifetime Health Cover, and about your age if you are under 30. Both change what you pay. Make sure the premium they quote is worked out for your situation, not a generic price, so there is no surprise on the first bill.
One to watch
If your employer has a deal with an insurer, ask about it, but compare the final price rather than the size of the discount.
Already insured? Try them first
Your current insurer does not want to lose you, and can go to the same 12 per cent to keep you. If you leave, they will usually ring and offer it anyway, so it is quicker to call them first.
“I have found this cover at this price, with six weeks free to switch. Can you match it?”
If they cannot, you have lost nothing.
No fund pays to appear here, and we take nothing from any insurer whether or not you join. Every product is listed on PrivateHealth.gov.au if you want to check it independently.
